PCS season always brings a mix of emotions.
For some families, it means packing boxes, cleaning out closets, forwarding mail, and preparing for the next set of orders. For others, it means arriving in a new place, learning new roads, finding new routines, and hoping to feel settled sooner rather than later.
Whether you are leaving NALO and New Orleans or just arriving, this season is more than a move. It is a transition. It is the closing of one chapter and the beginning of another.
And here at NALO, we know that every PCS comes with its own story.
If You Are Leaving NALO and New Orleans
Leaving a command is never just about leaving a job or a duty station. It often means leaving behind people who became part of your everyday life.
Maybe NALO was your first command. Maybe New Orleans was the place where your family grew, where your children made friends, where you found a church, a school, a favorite coffee shop, or a little piece of home in a city that is unlike anywhere else.
New Orleans has a way of becoming part of you. The food, the music, the culture, the festivals, the neighborhoods, the people, and the slower rhythm of life can leave a lasting impression. Even if this season was challenging, there are likely moments you will carry with you.
As you prepare to leave, give yourself permission to feel all of it.
It is okay to be excited for what is next and still sad to say goodbye. It is okay to be ready for a fresh start and still feel emotional about leaving familiar faces. Military life asks families to be flexible and strong, but that does not mean transitions are always easy.
Before you go, take time to:
Visit the places you loved one more time.
Say the goodbyes that matter.
Take the pictures.
Exchange numbers.
Ask questions about your next command.
Give yourself grace if everything feels a little overwhelming.
You are not just moving. You are carrying the memories, friendships, lessons, and growth from this season into the next one.
And even after you leave, you remain part of the NALO story.

If You Are New to NALO and New Orleans
Welcome.
Whether you arrived with excitement, nerves, exhaustion, or all three, we are glad you are here.
Coming into a new command can feel like a lot at once. There are new names to learn, new systems to understand, new neighborhoods to explore, and new routines to build. If you are also new to New Orleans, there may be an added layer of adjustment.
This city is vibrant, unique, historic, and full of personality. It may take a little time to understand the rhythm of it, but there is a lot to love here. From local food and festivals to family-friendly outings, community events, and the culture that makes South Louisiana so special, New Orleans offers an experience that is truly its own.
At NALO, you are stepping into a community that understands the realities of military life. People here know what it is like to start over, to support a service member through long days and changing schedules, to raise families far from home, and to build connection in temporary places.
You do not have to figure it all out on your own.
Ask questions. Reach out. Introduce yourself. Attend events when you can. Connect with other spouses, families, and command resources. Sometimes one conversation can make a new place feel a little less unfamiliar.
And remember, settling in does not have to happen overnight.
Some families feel at home quickly. Others need time. Both are normal.
What PCS Season Means for Our Community
PCS season reminds us that military communities are always changing. Families come and go. Friendships are formed quickly and sometimes stretched across distance. Children say goodbye to friends and make new ones. Spouses rebuild routines. Service members step into new roles and responsibilities.
It can feel bittersweet, but it is also one of the things that makes the military community so meaningful.
We learn to welcome quickly. We learn to support each other through transition. We learn that community is not only built by how long we stay, but by how we show up while we are here.
For those leaving, we send you forward with gratitude.
Thank you for the time, energy, service, friendship, and presence you brought to NALO and New Orleans. We hope your next chapter is full of opportunity, connection, and peace in the middle of the transition.
For those arriving, we welcome you with open arms.
We hope NALO becomes a place where you feel supported, included, and encouraged. We hope New Orleans surprises you in the best ways. And we hope this season becomes more than just another duty station. We hope it becomes a meaningful part of your family’s story.
A Final Note
PCS season can be exciting, stressful, emotional, and hopeful all at once. Whether you are packing up or unpacking, saying goodbye or introducing yourself, leaving familiar streets or learning new ones, you are not alone.
This is what military life does. It moves us, stretches us, and teaches us to build home in new places.
To those leaving NALO and New Orleans, fair winds and following seas.
To those just arriving, welcome to the NALO family. We are so glad you are here.
