Welcome to NALO: A Guide for New Families

Welcome to NALO! Whether this is your very first Navy command or one of many along your journey, checking into a new duty station can feel like a lot all at once with new routines, new faces, and a new place to call home. My role as your Command Ombudsman is to help make this transition smoother for both you and your family.

As you begin settling in, I encourage you to take time to browse the NALO Navigator website. It was created specifically to be a central resource for Navy life, the New Orleans area, and all things NALO. You’ll find helpful information, local insights, and updates designed to support you throughout your time here, not just during check-in, but long after.

First Things to Do When You Arrive

  1. Get Connected with the Command

Once your Sailor checks in, one of the most important steps for families is getting connected. Make sure your contact information is current so you receive important command communications, event details, and emergency notifications.

The NALO Navigator website is a great place to start. It brings together key information you may otherwise have to track down in multiple places, making it easier to stay informed from the beginning.

  1. Reach Out to the Ombudsman (that's me!)

The Command Ombudsman serves as the official link between command leadership and families. I am here to:

  • Share command updates and important information

  • Answer questions about Navy life and local resources

  • Help guide families to the right support when challenges arise

  • Provide assistance during deployments, detachments, or emergencies

If you are ever unsure who to contact or where to start, reaching out to the Ombudsman is always a good first step. My contact information can be found right on the homepage as well as the Meet Your Ombudsman page.

  1. Use the Resources Available to You

Getting settled goes beyond unpacking boxes. Navy families have access to a wide range of support services, and many of them are highlighted right here on the NALO Navigator website for easy reference.

Key resources include:

  • Fleet & Family Support Center (FFSC) for relocation assistance, counseling, classes, and financial guidance

  • Medical and TRICARE services to ensure your family is properly enrolled and established

  • School and childcare resources, which are especially important to explore early due to waitlists

  • Housing and community information to help you navigate life in the New Orleans area

The website is designed to help you find these resources quickly, whether you’re new to the area or have been here awhile.

  1. Stay Informed & Get Involved

We encourage families to stay connected by:

  • Checking the NALO Navigator regularly for updates and helpful information

  • Following official command communication channels

  • Participating in command or family events when possible

Even small connections can make a big difference in helping a new place feel like home.

Every Navy family’s experience is unique. Some of you may be seasoned through many PCS moves, while others are just beginning your Navy journey. No matter where you are, please know that you are not alone at NALO.

This website exists to support you, and I am here as an additional resource whenever you need guidance, information, or simply a place to start.

Welcome to NALO and to the New Orleans community. I’m glad you’re here, and I look forward to supporting you during your time with the command.
